There is nothing like it anywhere else: a forest has formed on the site of the Kakhovsky Reservoir, and the animals have already returned

According to journalists, ecologists are against the restoration of the Kakhovskaya HPP, as it will be a new act of ecocide, only many times larger.

150,000 hectares of young forest were formed at the site of the Kakhovsky Reservoir. Previously, this area was flooded due to the construction of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam. This is stated in the DW report.

It is reported that the water rising as a result of the explosion of the Kakhovskaya HPP exposed the territory of the Great Meadow. Within a year, the forest that had formed there reached several meters in height. A large number of animals have already appeared there.

Ecologist Vadym Manyuk said that there were no animals in this place before, because it was a reservoir.

“Wild boars, roe deer, hares, foxes have already returned, small rodents appear, of course, mouse-like ones. Also, by the way, there are badgers here,” Manyuk said.

According to journalists, Ukraine is already negotiating the restoration of the Kakhovskaya HPP, which was destroyed by Russian invaders on June 6, 2023. However, ecologists oppose such a decision.

“If it is restored, there will be a new act of ecocide. Only it will be many times larger compared to the previous one,” Manyuk said.

According to him, the existence of a natural floodplain will have a positive effect on the ecosystem and can serve as a cooler for the climate. If this place develops naturally, the Great Meadow will be among the five most valuable nature conservation areas of Ukraine. It also includes the Carpathian and Chornobyl Biosphere Reserves.

Earlier it was reported that Ukrhydroenergo is preparing a €2.5 billion lawsuit against Russia due to the explosion of the Kakhovskaya HPP. The explosion of the hydroelectric plant deprived Ukraine of 35% of fresh water, as well as the ability to provide water to four oblasts and the Crimea. Many law firms agreed to defend the Ukrainian side in the lawsuit.
