Red meat, from beef to pork, is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals, making it a great part of a balanced diet. While your iron and protein intake may be good when you eat this type of meat, the way it is cooked matters.
Unfortunately, sausages, bacon, and ham can be a risk factor for your high blood pressure. These three staple foods are “particularly high in salt,” meaning you should try to avoid them. The study found that processed red meat can increase your blood pressure by 17 percent.
The study involved 44,616 healthy French women who were asked to complete a dietary questionnaire.
The results showed that those who ate five or more servings of processed red meat per week had a 17 percent higher risk of hypertension. One serving was classified as 50 grams.
Just 50 grams of processed meat consumed daily could be enough to increase your risk.
The reason sausages, ham, and bacon can increase your reading is because of their salt content. Considered the “most serious” cause of hypertension, salt’s trick is related to water retention.
This causes your body to retain water, which adds extra water to your blood and puts extra pressure on your arteries—a perfect storm for hypertension. Plus, if your blood pressure is already in the red zone, salt can make the problem worse.
