If you want to follow a certain diet or eat right, then you need to be especially careful with canned goods and fast food. This is especially true for those with high blood pressure.
Fast food and canned foods contain a lot of sodium. For example, one cup of canned peas contains 310 mg of sodium.
Scientists have found that there is a connection between high sodium content and weight gain, inflammation, and high blood pressure. The recommendations of the United States Department of Agriculture emphasize that to maintain health, you need to eat less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day.
Here are some foods that contain a lot of sodium. You may not even suspect this.
Soups. They are high in sodium not only because of salt, but also because of various additives such as monosodium glutamate. On average, one serving of canned soup (i.e. 245 g) contains 700 mg of sodium, which is 30% of the daily norm.
Shrimp.Frozen and canned shrimp are often high in salt and preservatives, which are high in sodium. For example, a 3-ounce (85-gram) serving of frozen shrimp can have 800 mg of sodium.
Pudding. It will be high in sodium if you make it from a dry mix from a bag. A half-cup of this mix contains 350 mg of sodium, while a half-cup of homemade mix contains 135 mg.
Vegetable juices. Be sure to read the label before buying them. An 8-ounce (240 ml) glass of this juice can have 405 mg of sodium.
Tomato sauce. A 1/4 cup of this sauce has 321 mg of sodium. Other canned tomato products can also be high in sodium.
Salad dressing. Some of the sodium in these dressings comes from salt, and some comes from monosodium glutamate, disodium inosinate, and sodium guanylate. On average, two tablespoons of salad dressing can contain 304 mg of sodium.
Bacon. This includes canned sausage. These products can be high in sodium. For example, 28 g contains 233 mg of sodium.
