Studies show that a cheap diet product can help you get rid of harmful belly fat.
Visceral fat is located near vital organs in the body, such as the liver and intestines. It is one of the components of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease. Harmful belly fat can also interfere with insulin production, a precursor to type 2 diabetes.
In animal studies, acetic acid (AcOH), the main component of vinegar, has been found to inhibit the accumulation of fat in the body.
This discovery prompted researchers to study the effect of vinegar intake on reducing fat mass in obese Japanese people in a double-blind study. The patients were randomly divided into three groups with the same body weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference.
During the 12-week treatment period, participants in each group consumed 500 ml of a beverage containing 15 ml of vinegar, 30 ml of vinegar, or 0 ml of vinegar daily.
Results: Body weight, BMI, visceral fat area, waist circumference, and serum triglyceride levels were significantly lower in both vinegar groups than in the placebo group.
“In conclusion, daily vinegar consumption may be beneficial in preventing metabolic syndrome by reducing obesity,” the researchers write.
