Dietitians and doctors recommend certain types of diet for the prevention and treatment of heart disease. According to representatives of the Canadian Society for the Study of Cardiovascular Disease, there are three main diets for reducing the likelihood of developing heart disease.
Experts note that three diets help reduce the risk of developing heart disease. This is the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, the Portfolio diet.
The Mediterranean diet includes lots of colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seafood, and olive oil. And studies show that this diet reduces the likelihood of having a stroke or heart attack, even if you already have heart disease.
The DASH diet focuses on eating lots of fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, and nuts. At the same time, you need to limit the amount of red and processed meats, sugar, and sodium you consume. This diet was originally developed to lower blood pressure, but it can also lower “bad” cholesterol and provide other health benefits.
Finally, the Portfolio diet was originally developed in Canada to treat high cholesterol. This diet focuses on plant-based proteins (such as soy), nuts, oats, barley, psyllium, plant sterols, olive oil, canola oil, and avocado. The more of these foods you eat, the more your risk of heart disease and “bad” cholesterol will decrease.
