Three foods to avoid will keep your gums healthy

Gum diseases are caused by dental plaque- a film that covers the teeth and contains millions of bacteria. Certain foods can help this process. Dentist Hannah Kinsella explains which three foods you should avoid to protect your gums.

Fizzy drinks

Fizzy drinks are one of the main culprits of gum disease. This is due to the high content of sugar in them, which breaks down into acid and causes the destruction of tooth enamel.

Sour fruits

Just like carbonated drinks, sour fruits can be harmful because they destroy enamel. The enamel on the teeth becomes softer for a short time after eating acidic food, but saliva gradually restores the balance, neutralizing the acidity in the mouth.

Therefore, you should not completely exclude acidic fruits. You just need to adjust the amount you eat.

Bread

Simple carbohydrates found in pasta, crackers and cereals can quickly turn into sugar. Due to their sticky texture, they often remain in the space between the teeth.

As a result, the products remain in these cavities until the evening, which can provoke an inflammatory effect.
