Scientists from Japan conducted a study that identified three key factors that help keep the brain young until old age. Among the conditions is sufficient physical activity.
The study involved 855 people who were given a bracelet that recorded the quality of sleep, conversation and exercise, as well as heart rate using sensors. The data were compared with the mental abilities of volunteers with an average age of 73.8 years.
Further analysis identified three factors that significantly influenced the brain function of the participants, including good sleep, social contacts and physical activity. All of them play an important role in the productivity of thinking even after clarifying risk factors such as blood pressure or concomitant diseases.
The researchers identified the number of steps and heart rate as protective factors. The improvement in the work of the main organ of the central nervous system is higher with an increase in the specified conditions. As for the duration of sleep, it turned out that too little of it has the same negative consequences as too much. The optimal solution is a little more than 7 hours.
The picture also appeared during conversations. Those who had conversations for more than five hours a day experienced the same effect on thinking as volunteers who communicated for less than an hour. The best results are achieved with 80 to 320 minutes of social contact.
