Almost 1.3 billion people in the world suffer from high blood pressure or hypertension. Such data is offered by the World Health Organization. Genetic features can increase the risk of hypertension, but most often the cause is lifestyle. Omron Healthcare notes that processed foods are the main cause of high blood pressure.
“We all know that sugar causes obesity, but it also affects blood pressure. This disrupts metabolism, causing the body to produce too much insulin and leptin, reducing the excretion of sodium and water by the kidneys. This leads to the narrowing of blood vessels,” the company's experts note.
At the same time, some foods and drinks that seem healthy at first glance can lead to an increased risk of hypertension. Among them, experts highlight:
- fruit juices;
- sports drinks;
- protein bars.
All three products may contain an excessive amount of added sugar, which provokes an increase in blood pressure.
