After digging, the question arises of how best to store the rhizome of dahlias. Gardeners have several methods in their arsenal. We are not talking about any exotic or expensive options, for example, using paraffin. There are much simpler and more affordable ones.
In the soil. One of the most affordable and simple ways to store dahlias. Garden soil should be prepared in advance, and not wait until it is frozen so that you can't put a shovel in the ground. Frozen soil for the purpose of prevention from pests and bacteria is a good idea, but you need to dig up the soil first, and then freeze it or, conversely, calcine it. Alternatively, you can use disinfecting irrigation with special mixtures.
Sand. Another storage method is also available. The rhizomes are laid out in sand in a container. Please note that sand absorbs moisture and water, so it will draw it out of the dahlias. To prevent drying out, the sand must be moistened regularly.
Vermiculite. This material is perfect for storing rhizomes. Cover the dahlias with it and put them in storage. Containers can be cardboard boxes, crates and buckets.
