Thrombosis: 6 signs that you may have a potentially fatal blood clot in your body

Blood clots can be incredibly dangerous and can be fatal if not treated quickly. To save your life or the life of someone else, it's important to know the symptoms so you can take action.

There are several symptoms that may indicate the presence of a blood clot.

These include:

  • Severe headache
  • Neurological symptoms – such as fainting and seizures
  • Swelling of the legs
  • Red spots on the skin
  • New or easy bruising
  • Shortness of breath

A study of 47 patients conducted by the Department of Neurology, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience, Bangalore, found that severe headaches could be an indicator of a blood clot.

Additionally, more research is needed to confirm that a severe headache is an official symptom of a blood clot. John Hopkins Medicine states that if you experience symptoms such as blurred vision, fainting, seizures, and loss of control of a part of your body, you should seek immediate medical attention.

One of the most common symptoms of a blood clot is swelling in the legs. This occurs when a clot blocks blood flow. This results in the area around the clot swelling because the blood can't pass through.

Red spots, also known as petechiae, are another symptom that has been cited as a possible sign of a blood clot. Easy bruising, although not a definite sign of a blood clot, can be a sign of another underlying condition.

Another common symptom of blood clots is shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.

Other symptoms of a blood clot include:

  • Throbbing or cramping pain, swelling, redness, and warmth in a leg or arm.
  • Sudden shortness of breath.
  • Severe chest pain.
  • Coughing or coughing up blood.
