Twitching eyelids, including closed ones, can be an early sign of certain disorders of the brain and nervous system, British ophthalmologist Sharon Copeland warned about this.
The most frequent twitching of the eyes is the result of their tension and dryness, fatigue, stress, allergies, smoking, caffeine and tobacco use. But sometimes with these spasms it is necessary to consult a therapist.
“Eye twitching can last from several days to weeks. If week after week passes and you still experience spasms, do not delay in contacting an ophthalmologist or a therapist,” the expert shared the recommendation.
The doctor noted that there is such a condition as blepharospasm – in his case, both eyes the eyelids close completely with each twitch, and there is uncontrollable fluttering or spasmodic closing of the eyelids. Such a deviation is explained by spasms of the circular muscle of the eye, which is involved in the process of blinking.
Copeland added that twitching of the eyelids can be a warning sign of some diseases of the brain and nervous system:
- Parkinson's disease,
- Bell's palsy,
- cervical dystonia,
- dystonia,
- multiple sclerosis,
- Tourette syndrome,
- oromandibular dystonia and facial dystonia.
The expert added that eyelid twitching can be accompanied by redness or swelling of the eyes. If the eye begins to look sluggish after a long period of twitching, this is also a very serious reason for seeking an examination.
In general, Copeland summarized, any twitching on the face and other parts of the body that lasts for a long time should be examined by a doctor. time.
