Eye tests don't just tell you when you need new glasses, they can detect high blood pressure and other dangerous problems.

Regular eye exams can reveal subtle health conditions that are hard to detect until they become dangerous. For example, experts can use routine eye tests to detect a brain tumor before symptoms become apparent.

High blood pressure

It rarely has noticeable symptoms. More than one in four adults don't even realize they have it. Severe hypertension can cause some symptoms such as blurred vision, chest pain or shortness of breath.

Many people don't realize that common health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, which can become serious if not treated early, can be detected with a routine eye exam. An eye doctor can detect high blood pressure or diabetes with an eye test by looking at the blood vessels visible in the back of the eye.

If hypertension is undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to several eye diseases, including hypertensive retinopathy, when there is damage to the blood vessels in the eye, such as leakage or rupture of blood passing through the vessels with force.

Brain tumor

Tumors of the brain can cause swelling of the optic disc, which connects the brain and the eye. They can also restrict the flow of fluid in the eye, increasing pressure on the brain.

According to brain tumor research, there is sometimes direct pressure on the optic nerve if a tumor is present in that area. As it progresses, symptoms of brain tumors affecting your eyes include unusual pupil dilation in one or both eyes.
