California researchers found that obesity in middle age and a sedentary lifestyle increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. If a person after 40 is already obese, the probability of senile dementia increases by 18%.
Low level of physical activity also increases the risk, it increases by 13%. Other risk factors the researcher included hypertension and diabetes.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 70% of Americans are now overweight and more than 40% are obese. This is mainly due to low physical activity, a sedentary lifestyle and a Western diet, which includes a large amount of fast food.
American scientists made their conclusions based on information from 375,000 people. One in five was over 65, which means they were already at an age when the risk of Alzheimer's naturally increases.
