Two popular types of drinks increase the risk of hypertension – scientists

To prevent the development of hypertension , people need to monitor not only what food they eat, but also what they drink, scientists emphasize.

Research suggests that two popular drinks are associated with an increased risk of hypertension, a disease characterized by high blood pressure. from the serious consequences of hypertension,” said Dr. Liwei Chen (Louisiana State University School of Public Health).

Speaking about the dangerous effect of sweetened carbonated drinks on the cardiovascular system, scientists specify that they often contain corn syrup and a high concentration of fructose, which increases the level of uric acid in the body. The consequence of this is an increase in blood pressure. Researchers state that reducing the consumption of carbonated drinks improves blood pressure indicators, even if the amount is reduced by only half.

As for alcohol, studies show that “consuming more than three servings of alcohol in one sitting increases blood pressure for a while , but repeated drinkers can contribute to its long-term increase.”

If heavy drinkers reduce their alcohol consumption to moderate, they can lower their “upper” blood pressure by about 5.5 points, and “lower” – by 4 points, experts note.

The NHS HEALTH service recommends: to reduce the health risks associated with alcohol, men and women should drink no more than 14 portions per a week, and these portions should be distributed over several days, and not consumed in one evening.
