Two ways to preserve coleus during the winter

Coleus belongs to decorative leafy plants. Its peculiarity lies in its versatility. It can be grown both in open and closed ground. Coleus is popularly called colored nettle, because the shape of its leaves really resembles it. A bright plant is not simply left on a flowerbed for the winter, it freezes. Therefore, the issue of preservation until next year is relevant for many gardeners.

How to preserve for the winter

Coleus is planted in the ground when a stable high temperature is established. Accordingly, the plant cannot survive in the cold season. Experienced flower growers told us how not to be left without a plant.

Method #1. Cuttings. This is both reproduction and preservation. It is better to start cuttings in late August and early September. It is recommended to take side shoots that have grown from the axils. Place them in a glass of water or immediately send them to the soil.

The cutting treatment is standard. The lower part of the stem is cut with an oblique cut, the lower leaves are removed. In general, 4 leaves should be left on the cuttings. They will sprout in 10 days.

Method #2. Mix peat and vermiculite. Plant the cuttings and cover the container with a lid or bag. A greenhouse effect is needed. This way, coleus cuttings take root faster.
