Type 2 diabetes: a simple drink to reduce sugar

In type 2 diabetes, sugar in blood can rise to dangerous levels. Eating certain foods, such as tomato juice, can help control the situation.

According to research, tomato juice can moderate the effect of food on blood glucose levels. Scientists came to this conclusion as a result of an experiment involving 25 healthy women. The volunteers were divided into three groups, each of which consumed tomato juice, tomatoes, or water 30 minutes before a meal.

Blood glucose concentrations were measured at 0, 30, 45, 60, 90, 150, and 210 minutes before and after breakfast, as well as 0, 30, 60, 120, 150, and 180 minutes before and after dinner. Postprandial glucose levels (two hours after a meal) were compared over three days.

As a result, the researchers found that the concentration of glucose in the blood 60 and 90 minutes after consuming tomato juice 30 minutes before a meal was significantly reduced, in compared to water consumption. The blood sugar level was slightly lower when tomatoes were consumed.
