Unclean windows can be a health hazard

Window cleaning contributes not only to the aesthetic effect, it also cleans the film that hides dangerous substances under it.
Scientists representing the University of Birmingham have found that unwashed windows can be dangerous to health, as a layer forms on them, which is a shelter for many potential pathogens. These substances settle on the windows from the polluted atmosphere. If they are not washed for a long time, a kind of film appears.
“Dangerous substances can be stored under the greasy film on windows.”
Scientists studied various samples of greasy films using an ultra-sensitive technique. They concluded that the film on the windows is formed from fatty acids, which are present in emissions from cooking food. The researchers stated that the film is created by repeating molecular layers. Fresh air does not penetrate through this barrier and does not neutralize the lower layers of pollutants.
“Potentially harmful pollutants can be stored for a long period of time, and if the film is damaged, they can be released,” the authors of the study said.
