Unexpected cause of arthritis: scientists blame dust and smoke in the workplace
1
Scientists have found that inhaling dust and various fumes common in the workplace can increase the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that causes joint pain and inflammation. Previous studies have found a link between cigarette smoking and an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis, but there has been less evidence linking the condition to exhaust fumes.
To examine this risk, the researchers used data from 4,033 people with the disease and 6,485 people without it.
The team found that nearly three-quarters of patients with rheumatoid arthritis were exposed to at least one type of dust or vapor in the workplace.
