Unexpected risk factor for dementia identified

A group of American scientists has proven that a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of developing dementia.

The experts conducted a study in which more than 100 thousand people participated. Citizens wore devices that measured the position of objects in space for a week. Thanks to these devices, the scientists were able to track the motor activity of everyone who participated in the experiment.

6 years after the study was completed, more than 400 participants developed dementia. The experts made adjustments based on demographic data and lifestyle characteristics. It has been found that the risk of developing dementia increases in those who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

If a person sits for more than 10 hours a day, the risk of developing dementia increases. Even exercising could not eliminate the effects of such a lifestyle.

Now scientists want to conduct additional studies to understand what level of physical activity would be sufficient to minimize the risk of developing dementia in people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

According to experts, there are ways to avoid dementia. It is important to recognize the symptoms of this disease in time to prevent it. It is also equally important to give up bad habits and try to devote more time to sports.

Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are factors that increase the risk of developing dementia. Giving up bad habits reduces the risk of developing dementia and heart disease.
