Vermiculite and perlite – do not mix, so that the plants do not die

There is a tendency among novice flower growers that they try to use a variety of materials, fertilizers, and substrate components within the pot. This leads to negative or unexpected consequences.

About perlite and vermiculite

In many recommendations you can hear: “Add vermiculite or perlite to the soil.” However, it should be clarified that they are both leavening agents. But functionally they are radically different.

Vermiculite has a high moisture content. It is able to hold a lot of water. If used incorrectly, it can lead to water stagnation. Perlite is different according to this criterion.

Taking into account the above factor, you need to know that perlite can be used for any indoor plants. Vermiculite is poured into pots only for those that have a high need for moisture and grow in small pots. Plants that do not tolerate overdrying of the soil grow well using such a loosening agent.

Vermiculite has another application. You can grow cuttings in it. They will have access to the moisture they need, and frequent watering in this case will not be necessary. In small glasses it will dry out much more slowly.
