Intense exercise is the most effective way to improve heart health. They followed more than 88,000 middle-aged people using activity trackers. The amount of physical activity was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. It was also found that increased exercise intensity further reduced the risk of heart attack or other forms of heart disease.
Overall, rates of cardiovascular disease were lower when moderate and vigorous levels of physical activity were taken into account. By comparison, this is equivalent to a seven-minute or 14-minute walk.
Increased physical activity may also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, in addition to the benefits seen in overall physical activity, as it encourages the body to adapt to the higher demands effort.
People who exercise regularly have a lower risk of developing many long-term (chronic) diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and some types of cancer.
