Vitamin B12 performs three main functions in the body: it helps maintain the health of nerves, blood cells and create DNA. According to the British National Institutes of Health (NIH), the vitamin is also able to prevent megaloblastic anemia, which causes a strong feeling of fatigue and weakness.
Given the importance of B12 for health, it is not surprising that the body reacts sharply to its low level. The main symptoms include an unusual and constant sound in the ears – tinnitus. In this case, noise can appear in one or both ears at once. With B12 deficiency, this condition is quite common and affects approximately 15-20% of people with the disease.
As LiveStrong experts explained, tinnitus is related to the production of myelin, the protective and insulating sheath that surrounds nerves. Because B12 is involved in the production of the structure, the connection between the nerves is disrupted, resulting in tinnitus.
A study published in the US National Library of Medicine further analyzed the therapeutic role of vitamin B12 in tinnitus. “Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause demyelination of neurons in the cochlear nerve, leading to hearing loss and tinnitus. In addition, low levels of vitamin B12 and folic acid are associated with the destruction of the work of microvessels, which can lead to a decrease in the endocochlear potential,” the scientists explained. According to the NHS, tinnitus can feel like ringing, buzzing, whistling, buzzing, hissing, pulsating or even music.
