Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to a dangerous brain disease
Vitamin B12 deficiency often affects the elderly, experts note. At this age, the stomach does not have enough hydrochloric acid to absorb nutrients, including this important trace element, obtained from food. Doctors warn that as a result, a lack of the vitamin can lead to brain disease.
B12 is necessary for the normal functioning of the nervous system. In addition, it is responsible for the formation of erythrocytes – red blood cells that provide oxygen to tissues and cells of the body. It is mostly found in beef liver, fish, eggs and milk.
According to doctors, B12 deficiency can cause dementia. Patients with this syndrome often have a high level of homocysteine (an amino acid) in their blood, but the trace element is able to effectively reduce its level, protecting the brain from irreversible damage. Experts reminded that diabetes and high blood pressure can increase the risk of dementia.
