Lack of vitamin B12 in the body causes various health problems, however, if detected in a timely manner, it is quite well amenable to treatment. However, in the absence of therapy, patients can develop serious, and in some cases, irreversible consequences.
As the leading nutritionist Holland & Barrett Alex Glover in an interview, vitamin B12 deficiency leads to a variety of problems – from headaches and irritability to anemia and fatigue.
“Unexplained skin rashes, constant bruising, slow-healing wounds, muscle weakness and tingling in the limbs are the main symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency that should not be missed,” she explained.
Deficiencies with consequences such as physical weakness, memory loss, and more serious neurological problems are most often observed. According to the Mayo Clinic, some studies show that low levels of vitamin B12 may be associated with an increased risk of dementia.
Other signs of vitamin B12 deficiency include:
- fatigue;
- poor appetite;
- bad mood and depression;
- numbness in the limbs;
- glossitis.
