Researchers at the University of Basel found that teenage athletes who ate more protein had lower levels of depression.
The authors of the study noted that diet in general can affect mental health. The new study looked at 134 athletes who were surveyed twice and told about their diet. They also underwent psychological testing to determine their level of depression.
It turned out that at the beginning of the study, 14% of participants had moderate or severe symptoms of depression. Then they started eating more protein. A second survey showed that the number of depressive symptoms decreased to 11%.
