Decorative (cosmetic) contact lenses are freely sold in various stores, including on the Internet. The most popular option is colored lenses that correct the shade of the iris.
There are also lenses that change the appearance of the eyes in general. Many people buy them without thinking about the danger they can pose to the eyes.
How can decorative contact lenses harm the eyes
Buying cosmetic contact lenses without consulting an ophthalmologist who has examined your eyes and issued a prescription can lead to serious problems, including loss of vision, warns the American Association of Ophthalmologists (AAO).
Eye damage. Lenses that are not fitted correctly and do not fit your eyes can cause scratches, erosion of the cornea or even lead to corneal ulcers.
Infections. If decorative contact lenses cause corneal ulcers, the eyes become more vulnerable to serious infections. In addition, many buyers simply do not know how to use lenses correctly. As noted in one of the studies, people who buy cosmetic lenses are less likely to be instructed about the correct use of lenses and basic rules of hygiene. Therefore, they often have acute infections that threaten vision. One of the most frequent consequences is keratitis, inflammation of the cornea.
Harmful substances. Decorative contact lenses, especially those bought in a questionable store, may contain substances harmful to the eyes. Thus, the study showed that chlorine was found in colored cosmetic contact lenses. According to the AAO, the chemicals may come from the dyes used to tint and pattern the lenses. Another danger is the dyes that are printed or applied to some decorative lenses and create an uneven texture. As a result, rough surfaces can scratch the eyes.
