What can replace milk in coffee

Adding milk to coffee is a classic option for preparing such coffee drinks as cappuccino, latte, flat white, etc. But it happens that, for various reasons, you have to give up the use of milk or you want to slightly diversify the taste sensations. And how can you replace milk in coffee to get a drink that is not inferior in taste to the one prepared according to the classic recipe? It turns out that there is a decent alternative to milk in coffee.

  • Cream is considered one of the best milk substitutes for coffee. They are fattier, so the taste of the prepared drink will be softer. When using pasteurized cream, you can enjoy the foam and texture, but the calories in such a drink will be more.
  • Whipped cream is one of the win-win options, the coffee tastes incredible, with a sweet and delicate aftertaste. Whipped cream can be used to decorate the drink. But thicker than ordinary cream, and even more so milk, they also have a higher fat content, which affects the calorie content of the drink.
  • Ice cream is a good substitute for milk. Cream filling or milk ice cream is suitable for cooking. Vanilla ice cream is also suitable, but without glaze and additives that can change the aroma of good coffee and create an oily film on the surface of the drink. To prepare coffee with ice cream, it is better to use 100% Arabica (for example, Guatemala Sabanetas, Monsoon Malabar, etc.), although blends with robusta (Vilfredo, Tarragona) are also suitable.

Coffee lovers with lactose intolerance , as well as those who are opposed to products of animal origin, can try to replace milk in coffee with plant-based products. For example,

  • Coconut milk is rich in substances that can give coffee tropical notes – without the need to add various flavorings. It should be considered that the pronounced taste of coconut can interrupt the aroma of coffee. Therefore, it is better to use non-acidic varieties for coffee preparation, since its taste will not be so expressive in other types of coffee (for example, Gualvador, India Pachment). Coconut milk has a low fat content, the foam when whipped is less dense, with large bubbles.
  • Almond milk – when it is added to coffee, the drink has a pleasant nutty taste, a slightly sweet, delicate consistency. However, the resulting coffee may be a little bitter, you can add sugar to reduce the bitterness. But, having a low fat content, almond milk does not whip well, and the resulting foam settles quickly. On the basis of almond milk, you can prepare excellent iced coffee.
  • Rice milk is sweeter compared to cow's milk, it gives the drink an ideal pleasure without the need to add sugar. However, rice milk has a watery structure, so it will not be possible to get the usual creamy consistency. The lack of protein in the required amount makes it impossible to obtain high-quality foam.
  • Soy milk is the best-known analog of cow's milk, which is traditionally added to coffee. When using soy milk, the flavor of soybeans can be felt in the prepared drink. To avoid this, it is better to use Colombian and Brazilian coffee varieties (for example, Alicante, Brasiliero, Brazil Ipanema Dulce, etc.). Soy milk whips well and has a pleasant creamy taste. When preparing the drink, you should not heat soy milk above 60 ° C, otherwise it will curdle.

To find a decent substitute for milk in coffee, which will be an ideal option for you, you need to taste different ingredients. Experiment and you will be able to prepare a drink according to your own recipe, which may become the highlight of your home. But, when choosing the appropriate ingredients, please note that it is impossible to prepare delicious coffee if the coffee beans are of insufficient quality.
