What cannot be done at the Exaltation of the Holy Cross: traditions

Every year in September, Christians celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross – one of the twelve most important church holidays. On this day, the church celebrates the acquisition of an important shrine – the cross on which Jesus was crucified.
Ukrainians have several holiday traditions, but also many prohibitions on the Exaltation.
When is the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in 2024
The date of the holiday is unchanged – September 14 according to the new style This year, the holiday falls on a Saturday, so you can spend it with your family. According to the old calendar, the Ascension came on September 27.
The celebration dedicated to the finding and construction of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. The shrine was found by Helena, the mother of the Roman emperor Constantine. The queen divided the cross into two parts and sent the second to the capital of the Roman Empire, Constantinople. Now fragments of the Cross are kept in churches in Europe. Most of the shrine was lost.
Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord – what not to do
It is desirable to meet the bright holiday of the Exaltation with bright thoughts and without negative thoughts. On this day, it is recommended (but not necessary) to observe a one-day fast. According to belief, abstaining from meat food will be rewarded by God.
The prohibitions on Ascension are the same as on other church holidays. On this day, you cannot:
- work on the site, dig the ground;
- engage in heavy physical labor;
- quarrel, swear with the mat;
- wish other people evil, insult and envy;
- abuse alcohol and overeat;
- start new important business, move and get a job.

< p>Folk omens about the Ascension
According to folk traditions, this day is also called the Ascension. It was believed that from this day the earth moves towards winter, birds begin to fly away in a whirlwind, animals prepare for winter hibernation – so people should stock up and thank nature for its gifts.
Our ancestors also believed that the a person who sees the last flight of birds on this day can make a wish, and it will certainly come true. Exaltation falls on the season of the last warm days, when the earth is still warm and there is no frost. So, three days before the holiday, all root vegetables were removed so that morning frosts would not destroy the harvest.
