What diseases can be determined by the tongue, dentists said
A dentist can cure not only problems in the oral cavity, but also recommend visiting other specialists, if they notice the signals for this. And many of them can be seen on your own – it is enough to examine your tongue.
The oral cavity requires careful care and observation, otherwise you can not only lose your teeth, but also seriously undermine your health – inflammatory processes, starting with caries and ending with diseases of the gums and mucous membrane, have a detrimental effect on the condition of the entire body. But the mouth itself can tell a lot about health.
Many people have a white coating on the tongue. As the experts of the dental association of Australia said, such plaque most often has three causes: smoking, poor hygiene and alcohol consumption. When these causes are eliminated, the plaque disappears. Plaque can also be a consequence of taking certain drugs.
If you take good care of your oral cavity, do not drink medicine and have no bad habits, but you still regularly notice white plaque, you should visit a doctor – he can be a sign of leukoplakia, in which mucous membranes are affected, or a fungal disease.
A reddened tongue with brighter than usual receptors may be a sign of an allergic reaction. Bumps on the tongue can appear from spicy food if you are not used to it. But they can also be a sign of herpes.
You should definitely consult a doctor if:
- sores often appear in the mouth;
- you often see blood when brushing your teeth;
- the tongue or the inner surfaces of the cheeks are swollen, sore or numb;
- an unexplained sore or swelling that does not go away after a few days.
