What diseases can cause ugly nails?

A dermatologist spoke about the reasons for the deterioration of the appearance of nails. The external condition of nails can be affected by age and some diseases.

According to the doctor, with age, “young” nail plates, which are distinguished by a pink tone and a smooth surface, deteriorate in appearance. Signs of aging appear: the plates lose transparency, become dull, microcracks and roughness form on them.

The beauty and quality of nails can also be affected by iron deficiency anemia, which manifests itself as dullness and delamination. In addition, autoimmune diseases can manifest themselves in this way: alopecia areata, atopic dermatitis, and others.

In addition, household habits can also affect the condition of nails: for example, using household detergents without gloves, improper manicure, walking without gloves in cold weather, carrying heavy objects, failure to observe safety precautions when performing a particular job.

Uneven nails can be observed in autoimmune diseases: for example, in alopecia areata, atopic dermatitis. In such cases, there may be indentations on the surface of the nails – these are not holes, but rather depressions.
