What eye diseases most often occur at different ages
0
Over the years, the likelihood of vision problems increases Different eye diseases are also characteristic of different age groups. Some of them are very dangerous and can cause blindness.
Adults under 40
Visual impairments in this age group are mainly associated with accidental eye injuries and refractive errors (myopia, farsightedness, astigmatism, etc.). For example, 25% of children and adolescents suffer from the latter in the United States, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) experts.
As for eye injuries, more than half of patients aged 18 to 45 receive treatment for them. Also, even at such a relatively young age, there is a risk of developing diabetes. Diabetic damage to the blood vessels of the retina is one of the main causes of blindness. Experts also warn: the lifestyle that a person leads before the age of 40 can have a negative effect on eyesight and eye health in the years to come. Negative factors include, for example, smoking or exposure to sunlight.
Over 40
At this age, the risk of eye diseases is greatest. The main eye diseases in people over 40 are cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. They are often asymptomatic in the early stages. The prevalence of blindness and visual impairment increases rapidly with age, especially after 75 years.
Experts note: a healthy lifestyle and attention to one's own health can reduce the risk of a number of pathologies and protect the eyes. Factors that can help improve overall eye health include:
- a diet rich in antioxidants;
- maintaining normal blood sugar levels;
- maintaining normal cholesterol level;
- control of body weight and blood pressure in combination with regular physical exercises.
