What eye problems can occur at different ages
0
Among the problems related to the eyes and vision, there are many that are specific to a certain age. Edward Nichols, an ophthalmologist at the John A. Moran Eye Center (USA), listed important points to pay attention to and talked about the examinations and manipulations that are recommended to be done at a particular age.
Up to 10 years
When a child starts kindergarten (kindergarten is the name given in the USA to the “zero” grade of elementary school, which a child enters at the age of five), Nichols recommends taking him to an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive examination even if there are no vision problems. The specialist also advises paying attention to such age-specific problems as myopia, hyperopia, strabismus, and focusing problems.
At 10-30 years of age
Vision may gradually change until approximately 20 years of age. When myopia develops in children and adolescents, as a rule, it increases until the age of 25. Further, vision usually remains at this level until the age of 40. Therefore, if it is planned to resort to refractive surgery, it is better to wait until the refraction anomaly stabilizes – and then to perform the operation.
At the age of 40-60
In this age experts recommend to undergo an extended eye examination annually. Nichols also notes that starting around age 42-45, many people need glasses for reading or working on a computer.
After age 70
Among the most common eye diseases that a person can face in old age are cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. Therefore, it is very important to undergo regular examination by an ophthalmologist. And don't delay a visit to a specialist if your vision deteriorates or if you have any eye problems.
