One of the tips a specialist that helps you fall asleep better is to use the aroma of lavender.
Dr. Chris Etheridge, who received a doctorate in medicinal chemistry at Imperial College London, told the Express in an interview about the problem of falling asleep. He noticed that many patients complain about the same thing: if their head falls on the pillow, then instead of falling asleep, anxious thoughts start to circle around.
Dr. Chris Etheridge advises to use means that help to achieve regular and quality sleep, otherwise health problems may arise due to its lack.
Accept the situation. The specialist believes that that in the circumstances of the impossibility of falling asleep, it is better not to fight with it, so as not to plunge the body into a state of stress and neurosis.
“If you've been lying in bed for a while and haven't fallen asleep, don't force yourself to do it with all your might. Get up, get some water, and distract yourself with something relaxing, like reading a book for a while. Then try to fall asleep again,” advises the British scientist.
Use lavender. According to Chris Etheridge, the lavender aroma also helps you fall asleep better, it helps to relieve tension, to calm down – lavender was known as a sleeping pill even in the distant past. The expert stated that “the scent of lavender induces drowsiness and is recognized worldwide as a relaxant.”
Share experiences.Very often, restless thoughts that prevent you from falling asleep at night are a reflection of unspoken anxieties. Chris Etheridge advises to share your worries with loved ones throughout the day. In such conversations, you can get good advice, or expressing your feelings can help you feel better psychologically – this has a positive effect on the ability to calm down before going to sleep, he says.
Maintain physical activity. It is important to move and exercise during the day – it also helps you sleep better. During physical exertion, the body releases so-called happy hormones – endorphins, which allow you to feel psychologically positive, reduce the impact of stress on the body.
“If you naturally expend energy during the day, you are more likely to sleep soundly at night “, the scientist emphasized.
Take time for yourself. Another expert advice: every day you should spend a little time for yourself – do what you like, brings you pleasant emotions.
If over-the-counter methods don't help with falling asleep, you should see a therapist, advises Dr. Ethridge.
