What mistake do gardeners make when hilling potatoes?
1
Potatoes are hilled twice a season, but before you pick up the tool and go to the fields, you need to think: why do it at all? The first time potatoes are hilled to combat frost, weeds, and loosen the soil, but then difficulties may arise.
Why hill potatoes?
Indeed, after the first procedure, the tops noticeably cheer up and begin to grow actively, but this is all due to the loosening of the soil, and not because the bush turned out to be covered with earth.
The procedure can be repeated in 2-3 weeks.
But what if you didn’t have time the second time and the bushes have grown too much?
It is better not to touch such tops, because during hilling you can break them. And that’s not all.
The repeated procedure has no sacred meaning. The same loosening of the soil and the same weed control are performed.
Therefore, if time is lost, do something else, weeding, for example, but not hilling potatoes.
Rumors and myths
They say that repeating this procedure results in an additional crop of potato tubers.
In fact, there is no direct connection here, and some experts, on the contrary, say that due to frequent intervention in the soil of the potato bed, “peas” will grow instead of varietal tubers.
In addition, during growth, the tubers may be exposed to the light, which is why they turn green. Such potatoes are only suitable for seeds.
