What not to do on Shchedry Vecher: learn about the main prohibitions

Shhedrij Vechir and Malanka are celebrated in Ukraine on December 31. This holiday – like many other church holidays – has not only its own customs, but also superstitions. Ukrainians strictly followed them in order to attract success and happiness in the coming year.

What you can't do on this day?

Ukrainians have long believed that on this day you should not undertake anything new, because supposedly nothing will work out anyway. In addition, you should refrain from swearing and quarreling.

It is not advisable to give or borrow money on Shchedry Vecher. Otherwise, debts will haunt you all year. Instead, you should transfer small amounts of money into your wallet so as not to scare away prosperity.

It is better not to take out the garbage from your house on December 31, so as not to turn away luck from your home and take happiness out of the house.

It was forbidden to put fish and poultry dishes on the festive table. Our ancestors believed that this way happiness could fly away or float away from the house. In addition, it is not recommended to celebrate the holiday in dark or dirty clothes.
