What supplements are useful for age-related eye disease

People with certain forms of age-related macular degeneration may have a useful combination of specific vitamins and minerals. Taking these supplements can slow the progression of the disease.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 8 out of 10 people with age-related macular degeneration have the dry form of the disease. This condition is associated with destruction or thinning of the macula (the central part of the retina). The dry form usually begins when tiny yellow deposits called drusen form under the retina. Over time, the macula becomes thinner and stops working properly.

According to one large study of age-related eye diseases, certain nutritional supplements may help those with many friends. These supplements may also reduce the risk of the wet form of age-related macular degeneration and loss of vision in the other eye in people who have lost vision in one eye due to the disease.

Taking the following supplements daily may help these people reduce the risk of late or wet form of the disease:

  • vitamin C;
  • vitamin E;
  • lutein;
  • zeaxanthin;
  • < li>zinc;

  • copper.

“It is important to remember that nutritional supplements are not medicines, but they can help slow the course of the disease in some people with certain forms of age-related macular degeneration. An ophthalmologist can examine your eyes to see if you can benefit from these supplements,” the experts wrote.
