What to do with hydrangea in autumn: 4 stages of care

Four stages of care

In the fall, hydrangeas are pruned. Panicle varieties bloom on the shoots of the current year. First of all, you need to cut dry, diseased or damaged branches. Cut healthy branches with secateurs, leaving 3-4 buds. Dry inflorescences should be removed.

Process the bushes from diseases. Most often, hydrangeas have problems with powdery mildew and rust. In autumn, it can be treated with Bordeaux liquid at a concentration of 1%. Treat the ground under the bush as well, because there are pathogens there too.

After pruning, feed the hydrangea in 1 or 1.5 weeks. On 1 sq.m. you need 40 g of superphosphate and 30 g of potassium sulfate. Instead, you can also use barofoska (2 tablespoons per 10 liters of water).

When it will be very late autumn, you need to cover the hydrangeas. This will help them overwinter and not damage the root system due to low temperatures. Cover with compost and soil. Cover the bushes with this mixture.
