What type of cancer can be provoked by diseased gums
As reported by American scientists, there is a connection between gum disease and the occurrence of cancer of the esophagus and stomach.
Yes, chronic periodontitis not only damages the gums, but can also increase the risk of developing esophageal and stomach cancer. This is explained by the appearance of bacteria that provoke inflammation in the mucous membranes.
Periodontitis is a fairly common disease: approximately every second patient will experience diseases of the soft tissues surrounding the tooth (periodontal disease). This is often accompanied by bleeding gums (gingivitis), pain, bad breath and even tooth loss.
Doctors have already reported that periodontitis can lead to the development of cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, constant problems with teeth and gums can contribute to the appearance of malignant tumors, and not only in the mucous membrane of the mouth.
In the course of a long-term study, experts monitored the condition of almost 100,000 women and 50,000 men for more than 20 years. They studied whether there is a connection between the condition of the gums and the risk of cancer. As the authors write, “for 22-28 years of observation, 199 cases of esophageal adenocarcinoma and 238 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma were registered.”
Tannerella forsythia and Porphyromonas gingivalis are considered to be the causative agents of periodontitis. According to scientists, the metabolic products of the latter are able to change DNA and mutate.
Judging by the results of the study, people with clear diseases have a 43% and even 59% higher risk of developing esophageal cancer compared to those who do not. no gum disease. In patients with periodontitis who lost one or more teeth, the risk of stomach cancer increased by 59% and even by 68%.
