American journalist Esmeralda Pellot decided to conduct an experiment by completely excluding sugar from her diet for 30 days. The woman shared her feelings and achievements with readers.

She described her experiment on Little Things, talking in detail about how her body accepted the refusal of sweets. Pellot admitted that the experiment was not easy for her.

Why is a person addicted to sugar

It is known that sugar and products made from it or with its addition have long been firmly entered our menu. Confectionery products are perceived by many as a mandatory addition to the diet, and some cannot live without them even a day.

After analyzing numerous studies in this field, experts came to the conclusion that sugar has an interesting effect on the brain, namely, like nicotine, cocaine and heroin, it “captures” the brain's reward pathways. And this phenomenon has a historical explanation.

“Our hunter-gatherer ancestors had to look for fresh fruits as food. At the same time, “sweetness” on the taste buds meant that the fruit was ripe and suitable for consumption. These connections have survived to this day, so when we eat something sweet, our brain likes it. He thinks we've found a rare treat. The only problem is that we are no longer hunters and gatherers. We live in a modern society where sugar is in abundance. And our brain cannot distinguish a cake from a strawberry, so it reacts in the same way,” the article says.

In turn, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the Department of Health of the United States of America published a study on addiction to sugar, which is explained in rats.

“When rats, as an experiment, were deprived of food for 12 hours, and then given a choice of sugar or real food, they chose sugar,” the study said.

How to live 30 days without sugar

To what extent she is addicted to sugar, journalist Esmeralda Pellot found out for a month. At the same time, the woman kept a diary of her observations and feelings.

So, according to her story, she decided to completely exclude sugar from her diet for 30 days, because she began to feel that she was accustomed to sweets. She wrote that it was difficult because products made of or containing sugar were everywhere. Checking the composition of products, she found it everywhere: in drinks, bread, salads, sauces. Pellot did not buy any of these products. Although she admitted that sometimes she could afford fruits that also contain sugar.

The first three days were the most difficult for her. During this time, the journalist felt a desire to eat something sweet almost all the time. She became irritable, hot-tempered and suffered from headaches. Esmeralda felt a little better only on the fifth day of the experiment.

“Days 11 to 20 were the easiest. I was in my rhythm. I was proud of myself. I felt like a goddess who could do anything,” she wrote.

The woman noted that during that period she felt more energetic, began to make more time and sleep better.

“However, between 21- m and on the 30th day of the test, it was time for another test. I met with friends several times. And it was very difficult for me to look at the sweets that other people ate. But, despite the temptations, I did not give up and stubbornly went forward,” she shared.

In the end, the journalist noticed many positive effects from such moderation.

“I no longer feel like myself “a slave to my desires”, and I also lost 1.5 kilograms. This detox has affected my body, my mind and my life,” said Esmeralda.

She added that the ordeal taught her to moderate her sugar intake. The woman added that there is no reason to completely abandon the product, but recommended that you consult your doctor in any case.
