Before the transition of OCU and UGCC to the New Julian calendar, we celebrated St. Andrew's Day at the beginning of winter – December 13. After September 1, 2023, the dates of most church holidays have changed. Therefore, in 2024 we will honor Andrey the First-Called on November 30.

What do we know about Andrew the First-Called

Having set out with other apostles to preach Christianity, Saint Andrew arrived in Scythia. There he was captured by the pagans and crucified on the cross, which was later called St. Andrew's. To celebrate the 1015th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia, this relic was brought to the capital of Ukraine. And in general, it is located in the Orthodox Cathedral in Patras.

According to the testimony in the ancient Russian “Tales of the Past Years”, near the Kiev hills, the apostle stopped and said: “Do you see these mountains? The grace of God will shine on these mountains, there will be a big city and God will build many churches.” Then he got up and placed a cross on the mountain.

On this traditional day, believers go to church and read prayers. People used to bake cakes called “Kalyta”. They were hung from the ceiling, and young boys tried to jump up and take a bite without using their hands. If successful, their marriage will be happy.

Andrew's holiday was always looked forward to by young girls who, on this evening, divined the future, especially their betrothed. For example, it was believed that on the night of November 30 (December 13 according to the old calendar), a girl can see her future groom in a dream. For this, they put a piece of bread, baked with their own hands, under the pillow and said: “Judgement, judge, come and taste my bread.” Various items from the men's wardrobe were also placed under the bed.

It is known that the apostle Andrew was considered the patron saint of sailors and all professions related to the sea. Therefore, he is always prayed for the protection of those who go swimming. In ancient times, there was a belief: if you take a good steam on this day, you will be healthy for the whole year.
