When to prune grapes in autumn

First of all, you need to start working with grapes by thinning them. Cut the shoots this year so that the bush winters without thickening the branches. Remove a maximum of ⅓ of the total amount.

Inspect the stems for weak shoots. If there are any, then they are not cut, but shortened to 4 buds. Strong ones leave up to 6 buds.

Only the vine that has lignified and turned brown can overwinter. Use a pencil as a guide. If there are shoots thinner than it, then cut them. By the way, grapes are not afraid of the pruning procedure. The growth of the current year can be cut to 80%. Next year it will grow again. Unpruned vines freeze and can get sick.

Grapes are pruned after the leaves have been dropped. Try not to cut the upper branches, because they will grow twice as thick later, but there will be no berries. Grapes tie them only on horizontally located branches.
