The global Black Friday sales day, when stores traditionally provide the biggest discounts on goods and services, is celebrated on the last Friday of November. This year it falls on the 29th.
When Black Friday appeared in Ukraine
The tradition of celebrating Black Friday originated in the United States. Black Friday occurs immediately after Thanksgiving and marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.
The custom of holding large-scale sales dates back to the 19th century. The name Black Friday first appeared in connection with shopping in Philadelphia in 1961, and later spread to the entire East Coast of the United States.
In Ukraine, Black Friday has been held since 2013. In domestic stores, during this sale, you can buy clothes and shoes 25-50% cheaper, and out-of-stock models, sizes, or old collections – more than 60%. Household appliances, electronics, and household goods are given 5-20% discounts. In the USA, you can get a discount of up to 90% on some products.
Most often, retail chains and online stores hold sales before Black Friday for several days, or even a week. Potential buyers are informed in advance about the maximum discounts.
According to a 2023 Rakuten Viber survey, 66% of Ukrainians do not believe in Black Friday discounts and consider them a marketing ploy. Another 20% of respondents do not wait for discounts, simply buying what they need and when they need it.
What do Ukrainians most often buy on Black Friday
According to forecasts by “Admitad Ukraine”, the number of purchases on Black Friday this year will increase by 15-20%, while online sales volumes in 2024 have already increased by 19%.
According to the same company, last year on Black Friday, the leader in purchases was appliances and electronics. This category of goods accounted for 27% of all sales. Next in the ranking were clothing and footwear (13% of all sales), home and garden goods (11%), beauty and health goods (9%), and household goods and tools (7.8%).
We should add that in 2023, Ukrainians made 46% more purchases and spent 35% more money on them than in 2022. Also, in 2022, there was a trend among Ukrainians to buy energy-saving appliances, in 2023 there was no such trend.
How to shop wisely on Black Friday
Before shopping on Black Friday, experts advise making a list of things and goods that people really need so as not to buy too much. It is worth monitoring the price before discounts and comparing it with offers during sales. You can find out the cost of goods in different stores on the platforms:
- Prom.ua
- Hotline.ua
- Price.ua
- Ek.ua
Experts also advise going to sales with a thrifty friend who can dissuade you from spontaneously buying goods that you don't really need. Another option to avoid unnecessary spending is to walk around the store without a basket, as you can't “shove” a lot of things in your hands.
Before purchasing a product, you should definitely inspect it carefully, because it happens that defective or expired items can be “shoved” on Black Friday.
