This year, both Orthodox and Catholics will celebrate the Bright Resurrection of Christ (Easter) together – on one day.

When will Ukrainians celebrate Easter this year

Easter is an extremely important holiday for many Ukrainians, and its traditions are passed down from generation to generation.

Before this festive Sunday, homes are cleaned, eggs are painted, Easter cakes are baked, and other dishes are prepared “in advance.”

In general, all Christians use one main rule to calculate the date of this holiday: Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon that occurs after the vernal equinox (March 21).

According to the Orthodox church calendar for 2025, Great (many-day) Lent will last this year from March 3 to April 19.

Meanwhile, Ukrainians will celebrate the Bright Resurrection of Christ (Easter or Easter) on Sunday, April 20.

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine previously explained that this date is common to both those who adhere to the old (Julian) and those who live according to the new (New Julian) church calendar.

“After all, the calendar tradition for calculating Paschalia is common to all Local Orthodox Churches,” the OCU clarified.

At the same time, Orthodox and Catholics use different Paschalias to calculate the date of Easter, so they do not always celebrate this important event on the same day.

The last time all Christians celebrated the celebration together was on April 16, 2017.

Let us recall that from September 1, 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) switched to the New Julian calendar, so all “non-transitory” holidays (with fixed dates) were moved 13 days earlier.
