When you should immediately consult an ophthalmologist

In addition to the need for preventive examinations at the ophthalmologist, situations arise when it is necessary to promptly seek medical help. Experts list the cases when you need to make an appointment with a doctor as quickly as possible.
There are at least two such situations, experts of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) note.
- Suspect eye an infection Any such infection is dangerous, as it can lead to serious complications, up to blindness.
- Be sure to seek emergency medical care after an acute eye injury. An ophthalmologist will help treat potentially serious injuries.
There are also several changes related to vision and eyes that cannot be ignored. See your doctor right away if you notice any of these symptoms.
- A change or sudden blurring of vision may be a sign that you need treatment for a condition such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, diseases of the retina.
- “Flies” or flashes in the eyes can signal retinal detachment.
- Bifurcation of the image sometimes accompanies systemic diseases of the brain or nerve damage. The exact diagnosis will be made by the doctor.
- Sudden vision loss is especially dangerous. Even if it lasted a few seconds, do not delay and see an ophthalmologist.
