Holiday decorations and plants can be dangerous for pets.
Gloucestershire veterinarian Dr. Rebecca McMillan reminds of important precautions, writes the Daily Mail.
-
Christmas trees and tinsel: Artificial trees are safer. The needles of real Christmas trees can injure paws and gums, and their sap or water in the stand can cause poisoning. Tinsel and ribbons can cause intestinal obstruction.
-
Decorations: Glass balls break easily, and electrical wires pose a shock hazard.
-
Chocolate and Advent Calendars: Theobromine and caffeine in chocolate are toxic to animals. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, hyperactivity, and seizures. Treats should be kept out of reach of pets.
-
Holiday Plants: Holly berries, mistletoe, and poinsettias are poisonous. Essential oils and fragrances can also be harmful.
