Which diet reduces the risk of early death?

The Mediterranean diet has long been considered one of the healthiest ways to eat, because it is rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, grains and unsaturated fats. In addition, life expectancy in Mediterranean countries is higher than in other parts of Europe.

Recently, scientists have found even more convincing evidence that the Mediterranean diet prevents the risk of early death.

A new study involving more than 110,000 adults has helped to understand that those who follow the Mediterranean diet are at a lower risk of premature death.

Over the 10 years of the study, 4,247 people died, including 2,401 from cancer and 731 from cardiovascular disease.

The scientists concluded that people who followed the Mediterranean diet were 29% less likely to die than their peers who did not follow this lifestyle. They also found that the risk of premature death from cancer was reduced by 28%.

According to the researchers, the Mediterranean diet is associated with lower mortality. Adherence to such a diet, adapted to the local characteristics of the population, can become part of a healthy lifestyle.

The Mediterranean diet products include:

  • fruits and vegetables,
  • beans and legumes,
  • nuts,
  • whole grains,
  • healthy fats.

The Mediterranean diet does not include processed foods, refined sugar, saturated and trans fats. It also limits the consumption of red meat and fatty dairy products.
