Which people are at risk of suffering from liver disease?

A gastroenterologist and hepatologist told journalists which people are more at risk of developing liver diseases than others.

“The risk group for non-viral pathologies is primarily people with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, visceral obesity (with a large belly), a sedentary lifestyle, and overweight or obesity.

And also those who consume, albeit in small doses, alcohol, but regularly over a long period. I think it would be superfluous to talk about the harm of toxic doses of alcohol to the liver: the more a person drinks, especially in a short period of time, the higher the risk,” the doctor said.

As for viral liver lesions, the main risk factors are a mother with hepatitis or hepatitis C, use of injection drugs, and having sexual partners with hepatitis B.

In addition, health care workers and public safety services who come into contact with other people's blood at work, people who have undergone blood component transfusions or organ transplants before the discovery of the hepatitis C virus, and dialysis patients are at risk.

“Travelers who come to areas of the world with poor sanitation are at the greatest risk of contracting hepatitis A and E,” the doctor added.
