According to the Japanese Society for the Study of Obesity, the least likely person to develop any disease is a person with a body mass index of 22. But what about life expectancy? How is longevity related to weight?
According to scientific studies, the lowest risk of death is in those whose weight is slightly higher than normal.
Obesity is indeed harmful to health, and this is well known. However, according to the head of the medical corporation “Yusekai” Jun Sasaki, in old age it is better to be not thin, but fat. And this was proven by one study.
In a recently published study, scientists observed approximately 350,000 Japanese residents for 10 years. On average, the participants were over 40 years old.
It turned out that the least probability of death in women was with a BMI of 23-24.9, and in men – 25-26.9. And the maximum possible long life was maximum at a weight slightly higher than the standard.
Excess weight in old age is useful because it helps a person avoid a decrease in physical and mental vitality. That is, deterioration of cognitive functions, muscle strength, etc.
