Blurred or blurred vision in the morning may indicate an acute attack of glaucoma due to a sharp increase in intraocular pressure, an ophthalmologist warned.
Speaking about the effect of a veil that appears before the eyes in the morning, the ophthalmologist clarified:
“It happens that after waking up, vision becomes clear in just a few minutes, but until it is fully focused, it seems that a person is looking through a veil or frosted glass.” The specialist stated that this effect can be caused by the so-called dry eye syndrome – a common problem among those who spend many hours a day at the computer or spend most of the day in a room with dry air due to the heating. But sometimes the haze in the eyes in the morning is caused by diseases or disorders that a person has.
“Such signs may indicate cataracts or clouding of the lens. This is a slowly progressive disease and the feeling of a veil increases gradually,” the ophthalmologist added.
If, in addition to the veil, there is pain in the eyes and a person cannot see normally, this may indicate an acute attack of glaucoma along with a sharp increase in intraocular pressure.
The doctor also listed other possible reasons that explain why a veil may appear before the eyes in the morning.
- Inflammation of the optic nerve.
- Diabetes mellitus, sharp jumps in blood sugar levels, hyperglycemia.
- Migraine (the appearance of a dark veil often precedes an attack).
- Fluctuations in blood pressure (hypertension and hypotension).
- Vegetative-vascular dystonia.
- Atherosclerosis of blood vessels.
- Anemia.
- Taking certain medications.
The specialist noted, that the effect of the veil in all cases is temporary, clarity returns to vision. At the same time, headache and weakness may be felt.
