Why soldiers voluntarily leave their units: a general's explanation

The reasons for the voluntary abandonment of military units are related to the shortcomings of state policy over the decades.
This was noted by the General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Serhiy Kryvonos in an interview with NV, stressing that the problem arises due to the lack of systematic preparation of the population for the defense of the country. What we have now has cause-and-effect relationships with the previous activities of the political leadership of the country, and not only the current one, but also the previous ones. Because when people are not prepared for war during their growing up, (there is) a question of fear of serving in the army. It is that people have never prepared for this,” said the general.
According to Kryvonos, there was a program for national and patriotic education of the population, which was proposed in 2019. It was called “On Raising the Level of Defense Capability of Ukraine.”
“There, taking into account 2014-15, together with my team, we worked out certain proposals, directions for the development of the state regarding the resistance movement, the country's territorial defense (not territorial defense troops, this is broader), national-patriotic education of the population, pre-military training of the population, and informational resistance to Russian propaganda. Everything was written there, it still has its relevance,” noted Serhiy Kryvonos.
The General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine added: “If values in society are not growing (and we have the fact that over the past 30-odd years, the leadership of our country has never once raised the issue of creating a powerful system of national-patriotic education, creating national values that would unite the nation), then a certain generation of consumers has grown up (for the benefit of the previous authorities) who said: “I don't owe you anything, only you owe me.” Unfortunately, this is the situation that exists.
